Movie Review Of The Princess And The Frog

This gorgeous movie, animated in a rare 2-D style, takes place in New Orleans at the time of the Great Depression and highlights Disney’s first African American heroine.  In the movie, our lead character Tiana encounters a frog but unbeknownst to her, he is really a prince.  The frog begs her to kiss him, hoping that her kiss will turn him back into a human prince.  In exchange for her kindness, he gives his word that he will help her achieve her lifelong goal of having her own restaurant.

The unthinkable happens and instead of turning the frog back into a prince, Tiana herself is turned into a frog!  The two are sent on a wild journey through the Louisiana Bayou in search of a witch doctor, the only one who can return them back into human form.  But they must hurry!  If they don’t undothe spell in time, the prince and Tiana will remain frogs forever.

Along their journey they meet fantastic characters, including a trumpet-playing alligator, a lovesick Cajun butterfly and a blind old woman living in a tree in her boat-house.  The pair of frog-humans find their way through the dark Bayou in search of the Voodoo Queen who lives there.  She is the only one who can undo the wicked spell and turn Tiana and her prince friend back into humans.

In the meantime, the evil Doctor Facilier, the man who put the spell on the frogs in the first place, learns that the two are searching for the queen so he heads off to stop them.  He makes a deal with the Voodoo spirits and tells them that they can have all the souls in New Orleans if they can find the frog prince.

The movie is beautifully animated in an old, classic style and has unforgettablemusic that will stick with you long after the movie is over.  The rich characters will appeal to kids of any age.  It’s nice to finally see some real “color” in an animated feature movie.

While this might not become a Disney top-shelf classic, it is definitely a good movie to have in your personal library.  You are sure to enjoy the songs and while the animation takes a minute or two to get used to, you’ll find yourself loving the style, too.This film is hardly a theatrical newbie, not by a longshot.It was nominated for three Academy Awards, one for Best Animated Feature Film and two for the Best Original Song.
