From the thousandsyes, thousandsof classic movies I’ve seen, a few remain in the recall room in the house of the head as if they have taken the initiative to represent all classical films ever. Of course, the debate continues on what is the real meaning of the term, classical. Such positions maintain that the term refers to everything belongs to a specific interval of history, the classical era.
Other people think classical is decided by quality, by degrees of brilliance and conclusive, respected license, subsequently. Still others find that classical, as in classical film, means that which is treasured or valued by a majority and which stands up to the test of time. If it is maintained beyond its own period and stretches into the future eras, the continuing lives, the classes and courtrooms and libraries, it is worth being looked at as a classic.
So, as I hold values someplace in the middle, there, I will just discuss, or point out, or list some of my personal favorite classical movies. That is, I will imagine that I have been asked to suggest classic movies that one should see before one dies. Let’s begin:
What ever Happened to Baby Jane (But you ahhhre, Blanche
ya ahhre in a wheelchair
.)
Gone with the Wind (yes, the chance in this postmodern age to suspend disbelief concerning the realistic roles of men and women and feel that terrible single minded Rhett grab you roughly
swoon.)
Citizen Kane (when she’s doing that psychotically big puzzle in that massive, clammy area, her nasal, piercing pitch echoing in the background as he is shown, brooding and discouraged, in the foregroundthe dark areas as ominous as the dialogue and the story this far
.cripes)
2001, Space Odyssey (because of several things, but also because you have to watch it many times to get it
or any part of it, besides H.A.L. and his weird megalomaniacal ways
. Open the pod bay doors, Hal.)
Those of you filmic aficionados might balk that Casablanca isn’t on the list or has not been mentioned. This is ridiculous, especially for one that has seen so many classic movies in particular and films in general, but every time it came on, I would change the channel.
Then, one day a dynamo odd learning center director told me that I must have been avoiding Casablanca for a reason: she said that whomever you watch Casablancathe king of the classical films with, you will end up getting married to. Hmmm. I wonder, will he have to be a classical motion pictures fanatic, also?
