James May’s Timeless Toys

Will our children reflect on the toys and computer games that they have today with the same enthusiasm that James May exhibits for Plasticene, Meccano and Scalextric?

The TV series ‘James May’s Toy Stories’ sees the hirsute super geek of Top Gear fame revisiting his childhood toy favourites with a BBC budget and a bunch of screen writers. In the series Mr May builds a full size house from Lego, a huge bridge from Meccano and a massive 3 mile racing circuit from Scalextric.

Mr May clearly likes toys that involve building something. They come from a time when toys inspired an interest in construction, engineering and making things rather than escapism into a fantasy world of monsters and violence.

His TV series comes at a time when many of us are thinking about buying more computer games and consoles for our children’s Christmas presents. The latest computer games and games consoles have been at the top of their gift lists for many years. Last year they demanded a Wii Fit and Guitar Hero. This year they are hoping that Santa will bring them DJ Hero.

I’ve been wondering which form of plaything is actually most beneficial to their development? Computer games and games consoles or construction toys like Meccano, Lego and Scalextric.

I belong to the same generation as James May. I grew up with Action Man, Lego, Bicycles and Model Airplanes. Computer games didn’t appear until after I’d left school and I’ve never really understood why they have become so appealing. Personally, I would get a lot more enjoyment and satisfaction from building a model railway circuit than I would from pretending to be a disk jockey or pretending to play guitar. I suppose that building a model railway is actually pretending to be a railway engineer. Toot Toot!

2012-the New Movie at the Box Office

The end of the world as we know it

The world is going to end — again. Speculation of the end of the word sends people buying water and food storage just like then did in 1999. I’m not really sure exactly how rumors that the world was going to end or that we could expect the Second Coming of Christ began, but they were everywhere and even easier to find than money lenders.

Computers would all stop, worldwide, when the clock struck Jan 1, 2000. Since we’re still here, we’ll focus on the next end of the world, 2012.Is the Mayan Calendar saying the world will end in 2012? Most don’t really believe this.

‘2012′ pulls in the big bucks

The film “2012,” which stars John Cusack and details the upcoming apocalypse, beat out all of the other films in theaters in terms of ticket sales over the weekend. Since “Pirate Radio” was only realeased in a couple hundred theaters, the only real new movie release was 2012.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol pushed out of #1 spot by 2012. 1 spot moving to No 2. The Men who Stare at Goats came in 3rd with 6.1 million. Precious came in #. 4 place with 6.1 million. Amazing really, since “Precious” is showing in only 200 theaters. Michael Jackson’s This Is It still remains in the top 5.1 million.

The Mayan Long Count calendar comes to an end on Dec. 21, 2012. This is actually the year 5125 on that calendar. Theories abound as to the relevance of the 2012 date. The apocalpyse is being compared with it.

2012 is the year that disaster will strike. Filmmakers have made it pretty clear that the film is only loosely based on the Mayan calendar. 2012 is not meant to predict the future, just an adventure movie.

Box office top 10

Amazingly, despite horrible reviews, both “Fourth Kind” and “Couples Retreat” did well at the box office, coming in sixth and seventh place, respectively. Couples Retreat is still up there with the best of them. 5 weeks after it’s release. 8th place was “Paranormal Activity”.

Costing only ,000 to make, Paranormal Activity made over million this weekend. 2012 has already made over 0 million. The 10th box office moneymaker is “Law Abiding Citizen at .nine million dollars, with the Box following at 3.2 million.
