Movie TV – Movie Reviews – The Day After Tomorrow

Movie reviews this week looks at the ecological suspense thriller The Day After Tomorrow with Dennis Quaid (Inner Space) as a climatologist Jack Hall, who for years has been warning the U.S. government and the world in general that its’ reliance on fossil fuels is causing a great deal of harm to the planet (a couple of years before Al Gore’s Oscar winning An inconvenient truth).

His estimations of a global disaster from global warming which would usher in another ice age, which he predicts as a best guess estimate certainly not in his lifetime; that polar melting would disrupt the North Atlantic current, suddenly escalates to the present, with an ice age hitting the vast majority of America, and Jack in a desperate rush against time to save his son, Sam Hall played by Jake Gyllenhaal (Donnie Darko), who is trapped in New York, which unfortunately is at the epicentre of this ice age.

This is one of the first movies to highlight the environment impact of our reliance on fossil fuels, with several scenes to ponder the potential disaster on our hands, one of these is a helicopter going over Scotland that suddenly just freezes at minus 150 degrees Fahrenheit and there is a great scene, where Jack has been telling the scientific community would happen albeit with some scoffing, that the sun would accelerate the rapid decline in temperature to beyond freezing point, immediately freezing structures, and anything that happens to pass within the rays of the sun at that particular time, unfortunately he gets to witness this phenomenon first hand in a desperate race against time to find shelter while everything around him freezes as the sun comes up.

There is also an unforgettable scene as the Tower of Liberty freezes solid.

Not only does he have to breach the bitter cold, he also has to fend off dogs that have gone insane from hunger, looking for anything warm blooded to eat, ergo any humans they can find.

Dracula’s flashbacks to his Judas days lasts only 5 mins but it’s such an enlightening scene. I can’t explain it, but I felt a deep sense of fulfillment and satisfaction after I learned it. Suddenly I felt like I understood Dracula so much more and where he was coming from.

If you haven’t yet, you need to see it.

One final note, I made the mistake of watching the 2 direct-to-video sequels to this film naively thinking they would offer more insight and elaboration into the Judas story. They didn’t. This storyline was forgotten and more superficial vampire killing and blood thirst replaced it. Pity

Although he doesn’t actually drive the van he has a lot to do with it as the guys in the back are the ones providing him with all of the quirky comments that he apparently comes up with himself.

Police Van With Family Guy

The van has only ever featured in one episode of the series and was used to listen in on a conversation between Lois and an ex. Peter is of course thinking that Lois is having an afair with her ex when in reality she has just gone to the local coffee shop for a drink. Peter joins the conversation half way through and catches something that sounds bad when of course it really isn’t.

Ice-Cream Van- South Park

This program has gone on for a very lon period of time so many vans have featured within it, this has to be the one that appears the most. The van has only ever appeared in one episode and in the episode did not manage to serve ice-cream but to kill Kenny.

There it is, the best cartoons vans that have ever come into existance. Let us just hope that these toons looked into commercial contract hire for their vans to save a bit of money. Van contract hire could actually be a better way to use a van as it is a lot cheaper than buying one outright.

Just as your hero must have something that they want to achieve, the villain must be there to stop them in any way, shape, form, or fashion. This builds drama and suspense, both wonderful ingredients for an entertaining story.

3. You Must Have Conflict

Conflict, drama, or obstacles must constantly be in your hero’s way. For this, you must turn to your villain, and give them a reason to stop your hero from getting what he/she most desires. At the same time, you don’t want to outwit your hero so much that the audience feels absolutely no hope. People want to see ordinary people succeed, because they consider themselves ordinary, as well. For example, J.R.R. Tolkien’s book, The Lord of the Rings. Frodo, the hero, and small hobbit was a mere three feet tall, and managed to take the precious ring to Mount Doom, even after being stabbed by a sword, a giant spider, and having his finger bitten off. Lots of obstacles were present, but with a fair amount of successes to boot.

4. Focus on Pacing

The pacing of your screenplay must be smooth, not too slow, and not too fast.

Risk of being too slow-

Needless to say, if your screenplay’s pacing is slow, people will get bored to death. The one thing you don’t want your audience, of a slush pile reader for that matter, is walking out on your story. You want to constantly keep them entertained by giving new plot information with each scene, and a wonderful climax at the end.

Risk of being too fast-

Going too fast can, sometimes, confuse the audience, or the reader. Try to evenly pace your story, a slow scene followed behind a fast action packed one. The balance should be so smooth and graceful in order that the reader or audience will crave for more, or feel blissfully satisfied after the climax and resolution scenes.

5. Please, No More Than 120 Pages!

Your screenplay should be no more than 120 pages. Now, if you believe your movie can only be told in over 120 pages, then go right ahead. However, it’s not a good idea to push the page count over 150; at that point, your “masterpiece” will be directly rejected. Slush pile readers have many, sometimes, hundreds of other screenplays to read, and they want the shortest ones with the most potential.

A Bit Of A Classic- Postman Pat

This is more of a stop-motion feature than a cartoon but it has to be mentioned as it is certainly the most famous van to be made by somebody here in Britain It was first screened in 1981 and a newer series was made for 2006. This show was aimed mainly at the younger age group and both me and all of my friends were big fans when we were younger. Why is Postman Pat so good, well simply because he has to be the only postman that can get stuck in the rain, snow, sleet or even help out people and yet still deliver on time, and he doesnt go on strike!
